The Sierra Nevada Natural Park offers many leisure and sporting
activities, both in summer and wintertime. Today two main roads cut across
the sierra, one of which is the highest in Europe. There is also a full network of
forest tracks. To go much further into the park than the main tourist zones
requires preparation and a lot of energy. Precautions must be taken when
walking in the high mountains. A sudden snowstorm or misjudgement of
provisions could have unfortunate consequences.
There are "rutas verdes" ("green trails") for walkers
at all levels. The popular La Estrella path, which was in past times
the route people took who had been condemned to the galley in Almeria, is
an easy way to enter the park.
