This city, situated on the promontory of Cabrera Sierra, which overlooks the
sea, is one of the most attractive tourist sites along the Almerian coast. The
city's origin is ancient, although uncertain. Some historians claim that this
zone was that of the Iberian population of "Mesmencho Mastia", the
birhtplace of our civilization. Others maintain that its foundation is Carthagenian.
Nevertheless, the Arabs were the ones who gave this location the physical aspects
that it still holds today. In that time it was an important stronghold on the
road from Levante to Almeria. In 1453, it was conquered by Alonso Fajardo, mayor
of Lorca. Its wall, in which are preserved various relics such as the door of
the city, the tower, and the arch of Luciana, dates back to that time period.
The comfortable climate and its natural beauty have made Mojácar an
important tourist center where one can fish, hunt, golf, and practice many
other sports.
