This ancient fishermen village, situated in the Parque
Natural de Cabo de Gata-Nijar (Natural Park), has become one of the most tranquil and
attractive tourist sites on the Almerian coast. The area in which San José
is located forms a wide bay, sitting between two zones of volcanic rock, unique
to the Cabo de Gata ("Cape Cat"). This little town was, until recently, a hidden
fishermen's port with only a few dozen inhabitants. It was discovered thanks
to the tourist industry.
The site possesses a rare beauty and is, without a doubt, ideal for resting
and discovering nature. Its clean water as well as the cliffs and rocks that
border the sea constitute an excellent framework for fishing or underwater
photography, not to mention other water sports. Small groups of chalets fill
the hillsides from the mountains to the edge of the beach, where two ports are
located: one for fishing and the other for sports, creating a truly charming
atmosphere.
