Ubeda
Úbeda is located in the geographic center of the province of Jaén, between the Valley of the Guadalquivir and the one of the Guadalimar, to only 56 km of the capital of the province. By its situation, this beautiful city occupies a fundamental point of the road network of the East Andalusian, and is head of region of a rich olivarera zone.

Their origins are very remote and seems that they go back to the appearance of forms of the culture of the Argar, and possibly, the first groups of population arrived at the zone attracted by their great mining wealth. During the time of the Roman Empire she is well-known like "Betula", by his situation next to the Guadalquivir. But it is with the arrival of the Muslims when Úbeda enters history totally. On the old Roman establishment the city of Ubbadat was based al-Arab, and it becomes important commercial and political center of Al-Andalus.

In 1234 it was conquered definitively by Fernando III, participating since then in Reconquista. By his character of border zone, they begin to arrive great number of hidalgos, being based in the zone important families who are controlling the señoríos of the province. But this gives rise to a fight between these families, by the control of the city, like in Baeza, causing the demolition of the walls and towers of the Palace in 1506 by order of Catholic Kings.

Century XVI, during the reigns of Carlos I and Felipe II, is the time of maximum explendor of Úbeda. Members of the important families of the city, occupy excellent positions in the government of the Empire, appear again the economy of the zone and bloom the culture with the foundation of the University in the neighboring city of Baeza. It is in this period when the Renaissance Úbeda arises, with his palaces and towers, constituting one of the best monumental sets of the Spanish Renaissance.

Festivals and traditions

From the 28 of September to the 4 of October the festejos in honor of San Miguel are celebrated. This celebration commemorates the conquest of the city by Fernando III in 1234. King Felipe II accedes in 1565 to the celebration of run of bulls, that were celebrated in the Seat of the Market until in 1847 the bullring was inaugurated.

The Easter is of a great beauty, mainly by the matchless frame that offers the city, giving great splendor to the procesionales parades.

Also of great tradition and beauty it is the celebration of the Corpus in Úbeda.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of Úbeda has like main protagonists to products of the orchard, watered with the oil of the zone, of great quality. Some of plates more typical than can be tasted are the pipirrana, a very fine species of picadillo, or the back of pig in I marinate.

Within repostería the Ochíos, an oil cake species , and papajotes are very typical in the zone , that is pestiños facts with flour of wheat, milk, oil and sugar.
