Health
Spain offers universal health service nationwide. Primary services
are available for free.
For further free assistance, foreigners need some documetation as
well as a work-visa. People from the European Union don't need
it.
Safety
Unfortunately, more often than not, criminals prey upon tourists.
Thieves congregate where tourists are. The rest of the country is
comfortably safe, given normal precautions.
Street robbery usually consists of youths cornering a victim on a
street, or of a quick pocketbook or camera snatch, or of one
accomplice creating a disturbance, perhaps by bumping into his
victim, apologizing and distracting, while a confederate grabs
what he can.
Cars pose another problem. Windshield stickers indicate a rented
car that may contain valuable luggage or cameras. Whenever practical,
it is best to empty your car before parking; next best is to be
scrupulous in hiding visible signs that luggage waits inside, or
even that the vehicle has been used for a long trip.
Thefts in hotels are extremely rare, and violent crimes are a tiny
percentage of U.S. figures. Outside of the few high crime areas,
statistics show that traveling in Spain is considerably safer than
traveling in the United States, for example.
