Paseo del Parque
Pedro Luis Alonso
Puerta Oscura
Pablo Ruiz Picasso
La Cónsula
Garden of Paseo del Parque
|
Enclosed by the Alameda Principal and Paseo de España, it extends
from the square of the General Torrijos to the square of the Marina. Its terrain, once part of the sea, now possesses
a large variety of tropical and subtropical species, as well as an important
quantity of indigenous species. During the day, its luscious trees provide
relief from the heat with their shade while offering at night a tranquil
escape from the lively nightlife of the surrounding neighborhoods.
Gardens of Pedro Luis Alonso
|
Located off the east wall of the town hall, it holds symmetrical rows of
orange and mandarine trees that are interspersed with magnificent flower
beds. Inspired by the ancient Muslim gardens, this garden is surrounded by
cypress trees as in ancient times.
Located on the southern hillside of the Alcazaba and slightly connected
to the gardens of Pedro Luis Alonso. These lands contain a huge vegetable
garden staircase that extends toward the medieval fortress by means of the
slope of the Coracha, a gentle rise in the final foothills of Mount Gibralfaro.
This fertile zone is abundant in trees, creating the illusion of a forest
enclosed between the urban landscape and the horizon of the Mediterranean.
Jacarandaes, cypresses, eucalyptus, ficus and other trees and plants combine
to produce a romantic atmosphere.
Garden of Pablo Ruiz Picasso
|
These gardens are located in the new part of the city. They were constructed
in 1981, in honor of the centennial birth of the great artist and the city's
son Pablo Ruiz Picasso. They are contoured by four avenues: Andalucía
(a prolongation of Alameda Principal), Aurora, Américas, and Obispo
Sánchez Herrera Oria. The gardens are mainly characterized by
hundred-year-old species of "ficus elastica", many of which are
considered to be the oldest in Europe. Alongside these gigantic plants,
visitors can view other species of plants, such as jacarandaes, Dracaena draco,
yucca, and several types of palm trees, which create a tropical environment.
In the middle of the garden, under the shade of two colossal ficus trees
one can admire the statue created by the Malaganian artist Berrocal in honor
of Pablo Picasso.
In the traditional neighborhood of Churriana there exists an important estate
that was built in 1865. Its first inhabitant was the consul of Prussia to
Malaga, and, for this reason, the park is known as Gardens of the Cónsula.
During the first decades of this century, the writer
Ernest Hemingway was a frequent visitor of these gardens. This park, in
addition to hosting famous tenants, had and still has a special microclimate
that enables it to cultivate and maintain a wide variety of plants, herbs,
and trees in good health in spite of its age. It combines a large variety of
tall and leafy botanical species, many of which are centuries old and
are interspersed with Mediterranean and other tropical and subtropical species.
