April Fair
Horse-ride: Carriages

The kinds of carriages that one can see in the April Fair:
  • Break: Countryside coach, uncovered with four wheels. It's made to carry 4 to 6 people. The driver's seat tends to be higher than the passenger area. As a contry coach, the axis is high and the suspension goes over four strong spings, since they generally heavy coaches.
  • Calesa: The typical Spanish coach traditionally used for the public. It has two big wheels and a seating area fit fot two with a hood with four arches and a double compass. It doesn't have a so-called driver's seat because the driver sits on the planks which connect the horses to the coach.
  • Carretela: very elegant, four wheeled with eight-springed suspension. It carries a convertible canvas top and the seating area is not very deep, but very spacious. The driver's seat is set very high towards the front. Its allows multiple hitching.
  • Charrete: light, with two wheels and seating for two. It has no top, but does have mud-guards. They generally are hitched in tandem.
  • Duque: a strolling coach, very elegant with airous lines. A two-seater, with a convertible top and a small "pulpit" in the back for the noble's assistant. Its main characteristic is that the front area is very much forward with the front area sharply curved, with plenty of space in the center area of the coach. The front wheels are smaller than the back ones.
  • Jardinera: four wheeled coach. It's named this way because it's the classic model for the gardeners to transport their products to the markets. It has a driver's seat for two and a square back area with a back door and lateral seats. A canvas top could be set. It could be hitched to one horse or to a trunk.
  • Landau: ceremonial coach with a double canvas top and strong suspension with up to eight springs. Its two lateral doors have descending glass. The back area tends to be square, round or gondola shaped. It is hitched in trunks.
  • Milord: a luxury coach for strolling. The driving area high and leaning forward. Seating for two with the canvas top towards the back. Frequently it has a folfable seat in front of the main one which is called "bigotera".
  • Sociable: four wheeled carriage. Seating capacity for four face-to-face. It has a canvas top to protect the back seat and a paddled plank over the front seat that can be used as a back rest as well. It is hitched in trunk and the driver guides from a high set seat.
