floats while going to
the main Cathedral. The "brothers" are dressed for penance
in cloaks and pointed hoods. This way dressed, they are called
"nazarenos" or "penitentes".
The "costaleros" are
those who carry the heavy floats on their shoulders with effigies of
Christ or the Virgin Mary.
The foreman or leader, in front of the float, guides the "costaleros"
on their way.
He decides when to break and to lift the float
again with a few knocks of the mallet on the front of the effigy. He tries
to lift the spirits with encouranging expressions, for example "Lift
her to the heavens!", "Let's go, my brave ones!". At his
command, the "costaleros" move as if they were only one man;
with a constant rhythm, they make the effigy of Christ or Mary seem to
go walking.
Along the way of travel of the brotherhood, above all at the entrance of
its temple, it is possible to see from any balcony or in the middle of the
street, a folkloric "saeta", a type of sung prayer, by any
anonymous singer. The "saeta" is a flamenco song where each
person uses their own style because each person has their own sentimental
feeling at the moment.
