Fine Arts Museum
Plaza del Museo, 9
Tel.: (95) 422 07 90
The Fine Arts Museum
has been situated, since 1839, in the convent "Casa Grande la
Merced". The construction was done with sketches from the architect
Juan de Oviedo according to testaments from the painter Pacheco.
Its Baroque facade stands out as a work from the 18th century. It
was moved to a place that now serves as a renovating center for the
museum. The cloister was renovated in 1724 by Leonardo Figueroa,
which is the second most important painting exhibition center after
the Prado. It has been succumbed to continuos renovation for the
entire restorement of the building and modernizing of its halls and
installations. It has 15 halls with works in chronological order.
The visitor can recreate piece-by-piece the distinct Andalusian
paintings, and Sevillian in particular, from the Middle Ages until
the 19th century.
In the museum one can admire the works El Greco, Velázquez,
Zurbarán and Valdés Leal, although the best painting
is indoubtedly from the Sevillian Murillo, which is preserved in
the "Inmaculada", "San Francisco abrazando a Cristo",
"Santas Justa y Rufina", etc.
Other European masters, whose works of art are linked to the city
and the own history of the museum complement this vision. Sculptures,
and sanctuary and building works are exposed by their intricate value
in order to obtain the perfect atmosphere in the halls. The central
air and lighting system is an added feature to museum's comfort.
The Fine Arts Museum has itself art studios for restorement,
temporary exhibition areas, bookstores, libraries, a research center,
archives, photographs, a conference hall, and a café.
A curious fact: in this historical convent Tirso de Molina lived,
the creator of the world famous Don Juan.
