Regarding the background of the term "nazareno", given to
those doing penance, there are many versions. González de
León states that it is derived from the brothers of the Brotherhood of Silence,
called this way because of their affiliation or reference to "Jesus
of Nazareth". According to Bermejo Carballo, the name "nazareno"
seems to come from the penitents who want to remember Jesus Christ
born in Nazareth or as a memory of the anchorites of Palestine who
wore long hair for the vow of "nazareato", or
as popular name for the brothers that carried long crosses similar to
the one carried by Jesus to Golgotha.

The guide cross, carried by a "nazareno", announces the arrival
of the procession. The "nazarenos" walk in two rows carrying
candles, banners, and poles. Each brotherhood is dressed in a tunic of
different colors.

The "nazarenos" that carry crosses receive the name of
"penitentes" (penitents). They walk behind the effigy of Christ.
Different from the other "nazarenos", they are hooded without
the top being pointed.
