The mountainous areas of Ronda and Cadiz present the most interesting examples of singular Mediterranean sceneries because of its rock formations, climate, and perfect integration with the traditional handling. Various remains of sceneries of other eras are conserved as in the case of the Spanish fir forest in Grazalema, the gall oaks of the Las Nieves Sierra, the special vegetation of the Canutos or the magnificent hedges that protect the land from the East Wind.
The beginning of this route has a marked geological character; El Torcal in Antequera, the great clefts as the one in Ronda or the defile of Los Gaitanes and caves such as those of La Pileta or those of Nerja. Upon arriving to El Burgo one can abandon the itinerary in order to visit the Sierra de las Nieves and the spa in Tolox, wandering along the forest paths. Vulture JPG

CLEFT IN RONDA
From Ronda the route connects with the Grazalema Sierra, that registers the highest levels of rainfall in Spain (and not of the Peninsula as one is accostumed to mistake). The presence of the Spanish firs is notable, a species from the glaciers era. After one enters the cork oak park with narrow valleys called canutos that because of their microclimatic conditions, shelter laurels, gall oaks and rhododendrons. In the most open valleys it is possible to observe the interesting ash groves and trees forming a tunnel, such as the one of Majaceite stream, between the Charco de los Hurones and Puerto Gáliz or between El Bosque and Benamahoma. In the loamy zones there are the remains of carob tree and wild olive tree woods.

The fauna is very rich, emphasizing the roe deer that inhabits the shadiest places, the deer and wild boar. Also one finds otters and mongooses, and between the birds abound imperial, golden and the short-toed eagles and the enormous populations of vultures. Finally, through this route one crosses many meadows of splendid livestock that is easy to admire from the same highway.
